Some Mural Painting In Indonesian Traditional Houses and Their Problem of Conservation
The mural painting of Gadang and Toraja houses and painted ceiling of Kertha Gosa buildings have strong root on cultural background and traditional painting techniques. Thus there is no serious technical problem in conserving the paintings as the society has high knowledge and ability. Even they consciously preserve their painting art and technique by developing painting studio and training yunior painters.
On the other hand, the painted ceiling of Mangkunegaran reception hall did not have such a root, so that special attention should be paid for its preservation. No study on this problem has been conducted up to now, particularly to avoid further superficial scalling. It might be overcome by consolidating the paint to the marble by using a transparent acrylic resin. But, it is still doubtfull whether it will be efficient since the resin might not penetrate into the paint. Regarding the paint layer, whether it is porous and permeable is not known yet.
The technical problem in conserving the mural painting of Gadang and Toraja houses are just to conserve the wood. This can be done by consolidation, filling the deterioraterd part, and insecticial treatment.
Preservation effort of the painted ceiling of Kertha Gosa buildings, however, has serious archaeological problem. Painting replacement without paying attention on its authenticity, would have accumulatively different painting on its appearance as well as its meaning and symbolic aspects. This should be avoided by educating the painters so that they know how to do the historical painting.
